the comment about having to balance between being too opaque for some readers and patronisingly heavy-handed for others is solid for prose as well though and constant fucking nightmare for me

(modelling after another writer in the genre i’m working on next has taught me that she will state the same thing up to 6 different times with increasing clearness over the course of a few chapters, so that the ones who get the implications in the first place get to feel smart and the others don’t get lost…)
