Trope that can die:
Grown men telling their small sons to “take care of things now” like their grown, capable mother isn’t standing right there, listening.
I never saw it as the mother not being capable, more as, the father is leaving and cannot fulfil his historical role as protector and provider for the family, which he expects and hopes his son can step into with age.
I can see why it could put too much pressure on the son though
I see it much more as a father doing his best to impart one last lesson to his child. The father wants to raise his son to be responsible and to care for a family of his own, but if the father won’t be around to teach his son those lessons he can at least instill in his son the importance of caring for family.
