I think the healthiest way to view ones’ past is that of the Russians.

The Russians today celebrate both the Soviet Union and the Russian Empire, despite the two being purely inimical in philosophy and reality, because they see both as being chapters in Russian history, and representing the will of the Russian people. Ideas and ideologies can change, but heritage is forever.
