Because Pearls unhealthy dependence on Rose for self worth and validation never went away like Rose hoped it would. She wanted Pearl to grow to be independent of her, but Pearl still continued to worship Rose as if she were still “her Diamond”. Pearl saw herself as beneath her which made Rose uncomfortable.
