One of the worst things anyone can say to someone who is being bullied is, “This wouldn’t happen if you had more self confidence,” or anything similar. That sends the message that the bullying is their fault – that they have caused it somehow.

Being a bully is a choice. Being bullied is not.

“Don’t let it get under your skin!”
It was near-constant, and they dug at my insecurities.

“Tune it out!”
Nobody can literally tune things out like that.

“Don’t hit back, be the bigger person!”
Being the bigger person isn’t worth extra bruises and a bloody mouth.

“Go to the teacher!”
They never believe the person if the bully is known for being a ‘good kid’ or has friends to back them up.

“Stick with friends!”
A lot of us don’t have friends, and the bullies still made fun of them for being friends with me.

“Be more confident and they’ll leave you alone!”
Self-confidence was something I had very little of to begin with because of my past situation and being bullied just shot it.

Also the “stick with friends” thing doesn’t work because many times the bully IS  your “friend.”
