Before I read the books I thought maybe the fandom had just made Slytherins out to be evil and horrible or whatever but nah she really just wrote them like that huh

Not only did she make them evil, she didn’t even bother to make them evil in the way they were supposed to be. Slytherins are known for their cunning and ambition, so you’d think they’d be the sneaky, underhanded bullies who come up with brilliant evil schemes and undermine their rivals with elaborate, dirty tricks, the ones who are hyper-competitive and envious of anyone even a little better than them. They’d be bad guys, but they’d be the kind of bad guys you almost want to root for because they’re so much fun to watch.

But nope. They’re the most generic, bland, run-of-the-mill kind of ‘evil’ characters. They’re dumb brutes and snotty racists. They’re spoiled brats and sniveling cowards. They’re jerkass teachers who deduct points for stupid, trivial things just to skew points in favor of their own team. In what way are any of those things cunning or ambitious?

It’s like their whole existence was just for us to hate them and no thought was put into them as well-written ‘bad guys.’
