When I was a kid I was obsessed with Dr. Sweet from Atlantis: The Lost
Empire. He’s the first character I ever saw who was black/Native like me, and
since I’d wanted to be a doctor since I was four, he was basically exactly who
I wanted to be when I grew up. Now that I’m in medical school, I still think
about him from time to time and wish I could find a way to thank the writers of
the movie for giving me someone to look up to and relate to. He and that movie
mean the world to me.
