This is a good idea

It’s a horrible idea. 

You’d have a very small window where it’s actually edible, you’d have a mass of rotten fruit and fruit flies and all sorts of pests on the streets. You’d also have a lot of the trees die from improper care or not bear fruit at all. There’s a reason Orchards get specific care, you can’t just plant a tree and expect everything to work out fine. Take the money you’d spend on planting trees and put it into programs to help the homeless and not give them a big middle finger of false hope. 

Oh yeah we planted this for you. Too bad you can only use it from August 1st to August 14th. The rest of the year you’re fucked. 

Foraging from roadsides is a terrible idea too. The plants pick up contamination from exhaust fumes, spills and roadway runoff. Any wild edible book will tell you to avoid those areas like the plague.
