Requiring “cheerful obedience” is so creepy. It’s one thing to not allow rudeness, but punishing your child (!) for not immediately leaping up with a servilely overjoyed “yes, master ma’am” is unbelievably controlling. And you know people with this rule are the types to hit their kids. So these kids grow up knowing that if they even look at their parents wrong, they’re going to be punished or even hit with a belt.
