TIL Christianity is increasingly popular among China’s youth. As many as 100 million people, or 7 percent of the population, have converted to the religion. The city of Wenzhou alone has more than 1,100 churches.

And under increasing persecution I might add. It hasn’t been this bad in China since the Cultural Revolution.

China has forced the children of several provinces to sign papers stating that they have no religion, many of those signatures were forced due to intimidation and threats of violence to their families, as well as reeducation camps. It is considered illegal for children to attend church, or mosques, or to be religious.

Furthermore, China has torn down, demolished, and closed churches throughout the nation. They have kidnapped pastors, beaten, imprisoned, and sent church pastors and members of church congregations to reeducation camps for defying the new human rights violations in Christians, Moslems, and other religions. They have confiscated holy books and hymnals, and other religious books, burning many of them in the public streets.

To make this an even worse violation of basic human rights, China has declared that the Church must teach socialist dogma, and rewrite the Bible to support the Chinese government as being devine in nature, praise the works of Chinese socialist leaders, such as chairman mao, and sing the praises of Chinese socialist leaders and government if They want to continue to exist. This is just the “legally” recognized churches in China, and does not represent the violence and harassment of house / underground churches.

All of this is because China is the largest Christian nation in the world, and it’s numbers are growing exponentially every year. The Chinese government is afraid that the Church will out grow the boundaries it has allowed (and it is doing so). In response, the Chinese government is cracking down on any religion, especially in the children.
