The USPS is the fastest, cheapest, and most accurate mail service on the planet last I heard, and is the biggest employer of veterans in the entire country.
On top of that, mail carriers:
-have wages that top out at over $30 an hour (and their wages go up in predictable steps based on how long they’ve been with the USPS)
-have excellent benefits, including a shit-ton of vacation time, plus a pension, and they can retire after thirty yearsBut they also have one of the oldest, biggest, strongest unions in the country. That must piss off Republicans so much.
Also, side note: they take zero taxpayer dollars. They’re entirely funded by postage.
(”But I heard they were doing terribly!” They’re not. Congress saddled them with pre-funding their retirement 75 years out to intentionally put them in the red and make them look bad. I’m not joking or exaggerating. There’s tons of info, but here’s the USPS’s own info: https://about.usps.com/who-we-are/financials/annual-reports/fy2010/ar2010_4_002.htm )
Yes! I’ve been talking about this forever! The USPS is extremely efficient and completely funds itself!
The USPS is fantastic. However, I don’t see how this relates to healthcare as the last tweet mentioned.
One of the reasons the USPS functions so well is because it has to compete with private companies such as FedEx. Universal healthcare systems often face no such competition, and therefore end up with complications such as long wait times for care and incomplete healthcare packages.
Secondly, as @aprillikesthings said earlier, the USPS doesn’t use taxpayer money, and is instead funded by postage fees. There is no possible way this concept could translate to healthcare.
Oh yes, I was so excited about a pro-USPS post that I forgot about the bit about healthcare.
Universal healthcare is shit. Canadian healthcare right now currently blows. There’s a shortage of family physicians and pursuing medicine is no longer as desirable as it once was. Even in America, any doctor worth his salt or who doesn’t hate money refuses government healthcare because most of the time they just don’t get paid. Doctors who DO accept Medicaid are usually crap. Yadda yadda, socialized healthcare is extremely inefficient and unsustainable, you already know what I mean to say.
