so does “yandere” mean “super possessive toxic freak” or…?

It’s a combination of the Japanese “yanderu” which means severely mentally ill and “dere dere” which means “obsessively in love”

So yandere is a trope in Japanese media about someone who is severely mentally unwell as a result of their obsession with someone. Often times they will be stalkers and in extreme cases will outright murder other people who hurt the object of their affection or are rivals who genuinely love the person and are “in the way”

But do not fear, there are other dere tropes not as violent
