Trope that can die:
Grown men telling their small sons to “take care of things now” like their grown, capable mother isn’t standing right there, listening.
I never saw it as the mother not being capable, more as, the father is leaving and cannot fulfil his historical role as protector and provider for the family, which he expects and hopes his son can step into with age.
I can see why it could put too much pressure on the son though
