Hawaii is talking about banning sunscreen that’s harmful to coral and I think that’s very environmentally sexy of them
Cancer is not caused by the sun, it’s caused by toxic things people pick on their skin one of them being sunscreen.
It’s worse when people go to beach with it on as it washes into the ocean damaging the precious habitats residing in it.
It’s quite useless actually, coconut oil works great as it blocks put Ultra Violet Ray’s that cause sunburns but allows InferRed rays allowing you to get tan (which is what I did my first week in Hawaii to adapt the sun).
The problem is, sunscreen companies make a lot of money and they don’t care if it damages reefs or causes skin cancer to it’s customers, as long as it makes money. They will spread as much misinformation (as corporations do) to keep up sales, the sun doesn’t cause cancer, that akes absolutely no sense, obviously it’s what people put on their bodies.
Going to try this
UVA and UVB are two types of ultraviolet rays sunscreen protects against. UVB ages you wrinkles, etc. UVA penetrates the skin damaging keratinocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis, where most skin cancers occur.
Doing a search on the internet I found no reliable sources saying that coconut oil is an effective sunscreen. Just “oh i put some on my husband he got red but ended up with a small tan”. Yes tans aren’t as bad as a full on sunburn but you’ll still damaging your skin and increasing your risk of cancer. Just because you didn’t sunburn doesn’t mean your skin is damaged. I know this personally my friend was the “oh I don’t burn I tan” type no family history of any type of cancer and she ended up with melanoma which she herself attributes to the many summers she spent without sunscreen getting tan.
I get the want for alternative sunscreens, my grandmother is allergic to sunscreen and having gotten skin cancer (yes she tried the coconut oil as a teen) she can’t go outside for more than a couple minutes during the summer. And I’d love to protect the reefs too. Luckily there are some reef safe sunscreens available (this list is pretty compressive and if you search for reef safe sunscreens you’ll find them). I’d love for their to be an alternative to sunscreen that was a cheap as coconut oil but OP provides no evidence and no does anyone else on the internet besides “oh I just tanned!” WHICH IS STILL DANGEROUS.
If you want to protect the environment and avoid skin damage and potential cancer apply sunscreen 10 to 15 minutes before heading outside or swimming (allows it to absorb more into your skin). Along with sunscreen wear lightweight long sleeved shirts and pants, along with a hat and sunglasses.
ADDITONAL NOTE: sunscreen will not protect you from all of the UV rays but it’s still heck of a lot better than coconut oil
Wrong wrong wrong! Do NOT USE COCONUT OIL AS SUN SCREEN! You will roast in the hot sun. My bio teacher had this exact conversation with the class not long ago. Also, yes, skin cancer is caused by sun exposure. If you got badly sunburned as a child or go out in the sun offten your chances of getting skin cancer rises.
Just dont listen to indigoaurora.
